Note:
The symbolic power of the Stanley Cup and its promise of athletic supremacy is understood Canada-wide, and apart from hockey, there is no other sport that includes a 24-hour victory celebration with the trophy for the winning team.
Donated in 1892 by Lord Stanley, who was appointed Governor General to Canada by Queen Victoria and served from 1888 to 1893, the legacy of the Stanley Cup is a quintessential part of both Canadian heritage and present day fandom. The idea for the Cup came after Stanley was invited to attend a hockey match in Montreal during the first year of his posting; he quickly fell in love with the game and decided that the sport needed a symbol that would inspire teams from all over the country to compete. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945, Lord Stanley’s pivotal role in Canadian history will certainly live on through the game which he so loved and admired.
