Presented by subscription to the memory of Richard Routh (1749-1801), Chief Justice of Newfoundland (1798-1801), whose life was lost at sea with all aboard H.M. Sloop of War “The Fly”

Each cup engraved on one side “THIS, AND A SIMILAR CUP, / A TRIBUTE OF GRATITUDE, RESPECT AND ESTEEM, / For the memory of the late / RICHARD ROUTH ESQUIRE, / CHIEF JUSTICE AND COLLECTOR OF HIS MAJESTYS / CUSTOMS IN THE ISLAND OF NEWFOUNDLAND, / were presented by the SUBSCRIBERS written / on the other side in testemony of his / UPRIGHT, HONORABLE AND MERITORIOUS CONDUCT, / in the discharge of his DUTY, / in those HIGH and Dignified OFFICES.”; the other side with subscribers: “VICE ADMIRAL / SIR ERASMUS GOWER / GOVERNOR OF NEWFOUNDLAND / IOHN REEVES ESQR. / GEORGE GARLAND ESQR., MP / IOHN IEFFERY ESQR., MP / WM.
