“Washington Holiday” was published as an exhibition poster for “An American Portrait 1776-1976.” The exhibition was held at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, June 8 - July 5, 1976.
An important illustrator and graphic designer, Lindner made his living by working for Vogue, Fortune and Harper's Bazaar magazines. He took up painting in his 50s. He developed his flat, bold style from a fusion of his childhood memories in Germany and by the vulgar aspects of city life in New York, having arrived there in 1941. His harsh colors and defined outlines exaggerated the garishness of the streetwalkers, circus women, and men in uniform that became his favorite subjects. Overtones of Berlin’s cabaret culture of the 1930s infuse his style.
