Note:
Excerpt from collector’s memoir: In the summer of 1957, I accompanied two Inuit hunters on a seal hunt. We encountered a huge walrus lying on an ice floe. When the Inuit attempted to harpoon the walrus, he missed because the sealskin line had become tangled inside the boat. The walrus immediately rose out of the water and would have easily overturned the boat but for the quick reaction of the Inuit on the motor who managed to safely evade the walrus. The second attempt to harpoon the walrus was scary but successful. The walrus was brought to the shore where I was presented with one of the tusks. I brought the tusk back to the ship where one of the Inuit artists on board etched the designs on it.
