Large folio containing 44 engraved plates (some folded) on full panelled vellum illustrating text in two parts: Section I, Premiere Partie includes engravings 1-24 after religious works with forward describing each plate: Section II: Description de la Grotte de Versailles, 1676, illustrated with 20 engraved plates and an attached handwritten note on back of titlepage explains the history of the Grotto. The plates all After Old Masters including: Edelinck, Picart, Masson, and others. Includes the double page plate engraved by Edelinck from a drawing by Monier, dated 1678 in the plate which is often added to copies of the 1676 edition, this present 1679 edition was the first to contain the full complement of plates. Marbled boards with leather quarter and corners. Ex-libris Lady Rycroft bookplate inside front cover and inscribed, Lady Rycroft in pencil.

The collection was commissioned as part of the Cabinet du Roy series, recording Louis XIV’s role as a patron of architecture, sculpture and painting.
The Grotto designed in the early 1660’s was demolished as early as 1684.
