"Color, shape, and pattern are foremost. They clamor to be translated into a language spoken in paint on paper, panel or canvas."
- Kathryn Kroo -
Kathryn Gabinet-Kroo was born in Salem, Oregon, in 1953. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English in 1975 from Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, and went on to study life drawing and black and white photography at the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts from 1975 to 1977. When she moved to Montreal in 1977 and found herself without a darkroom, she began experimenting with watercolors and oils. As a self-taught painter, Kroo soon developed techniques to satisfy her personal imagery, primarily highly realistic still lives. Her paintings later evolved to large-scale monochromatic portraits of dancers and artists.
Kroo has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the United States and taught for drawing and painting at the Saidye Bronfman Center School of Fine Arts for several years. Her work is included in corporate and public collections in Canada and the United States, including the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Kroo earned her Masters in Translation Studies in 2001 from Concordia University, and specializes in the translation of 20th Century Quebecois literature. She lives in Montreal, Quebec, where she has had her studio since 1989.
