Note:
At times, particularly in the dark depths of winter, Jean-Paul Lemieux (1904-1990) found it difficult to conceal his disdain for city life, and had been known to express animosity towards the discomfort caused by that hivernal season. It comes as no surprise, therefore, to hear of his joyful memories of summer visits to the family home on Ile aux Coudres, a little island in the St. Lawrence River, about an hour from the city. That unspoiled island could be the setting for this charming painting. On Ile aux Coudres, Lemieux could take refuge. He spent his childhood here, and would often turn to those memories for inspiration. His daughter, Anne, is pictured here walking along the shore of the St. Lawrence River revelling in the tranquility of country life, an affinity bestowed osmotically father to daughter.
